Kitchen Range Hoods

Range hoods are one of the most confusing requirements in the code — and one of the most common to fail. The hood has to be listed in the HVI or AHAM directory with a rated airflow and sound level that meet your home’s requirements. We don’t measure the hood; we verify the listing. If it isn’t listed, it fails.

Three things the hood must have

All three have to be in the directory listing for the exact model.

01

A listing

HVI or AHAM directory

The exact model must be in the HVI or AHAM directory. Not listed = fails, no matter what the box says.

02

Enough airflow

Working / high speed

Rated CFM at working or high speed that meets Table 150.0-G for your home’s floor area and cooktop fuel (below).

03

Quiet enough

≥100 CFM at ≤3.0 sones

A sound rating of 3.0 sones or less at a speed of at least 100 CFM. Many hoods are only rated at high speed — those don’t qualify.

Must vent to the outdoors. Recirculating and ductless hoods don’t qualify. Capture efficiency (CE) ratings aren’t published in either directory yet, so CE can’t currently be used to comply.

Table 150.0-G — range hood airflow

Minimum rated airflow (or capture efficiency) by dwelling floor area and cooktop fuel. For an ADU, use the ADU’s floor area. Table 150.0-G

Dwelling floor area (ft²)Electric / inductionGasCE electricCE gas
>1,500110 CFM180 CFM50%70%
>1,000–1,500110 CFM250 CFM50%80%
750–1,000130 CFM280 CFM55%85%
<750160 CFM280 CFM65%85%
Example: a 700 sq ft ADU with a gas cooktop needs a hood listed at 280 CFM or more at working/high speed — and 3.0 sones or less at 100 CFM or more. That’s a hard combination to find in a 30″ hood. Check before you buy.

Table 150.0-H — duct sizing

The installer can skip measuring hood airflow if the duct meets this table: total duct 25 ft or less, no more than 3 elbows, and a full-size exterior termination. Fan rating at ≥0.25″ w.c. Table 150.0-H

Flex duct (in.)45667788910NPNPNP
NP = not permitted. Flex duct must be fully extended. Noncircular duct: equivalent diameter = 4 × area ÷ perimeter.

What to expect

How we handle range hoods when you hire us.

Before you buy

Send us the model first

Send us the make and model before you order. We check the HVI or AHAM listing against your floor area and cooktop fuel, so you don’t install a hood that can’t pass. At inspection, we photograph the model number, confirm the listing, and record the rated CFM and sones on the CF2R/CF3R.

The code

§150.0(o)1GLocal mechanical exhaust
A local mechanical exhaust system shall be installed in each kitchen and bathroom. Systems shall be rated for airflow in accordance with ASHRAE 62.2 section 7.1.
i. Nonenclosed kitchens shall have a demand-controlled mechanical exhaust system…
iii.b. Ventilation rate and capture efficiency. The system shall meet or exceed either the minimum airflow in accordance with Table 150.0-E or the minimum capture efficiency in accordance with Table 150.0-E, and Table 150.0-G. Capture efficiency ratings shall be determined in accordance with ASTM E3087 and listed in a product directory approved by the Energy Commission.
§150.0(o)1GviSound rating
Local mechanical exhaust systems shall be rated for sound in accordance with Section 7.2 of ASHRAE 62.2 at no less than the minimum airflow rate required by Section 150.0(o)1G.
Exception: Kitchen range hoods may be rated for sound at no less than 100 cfm at a static pressure determined at working speed as specified in HVI 916 section 7.2.

*NEW FOR 2025* The 2025 code references Section 7.3 of ASHRAE 62.2 for the sound rating; the requirement is otherwise unchanged.
§150.0(o)2Field verification of range hoods
B. Kitchen local mechanical exhaust—vented range hoods. Vented range hoods installed to comply with local mechanical exhaust requirements specified in Section 150.0(o)1G shall be field verified in accordance with the procedures in Reference Residential Appendix RA3.7.4.3 to confirm the model is rated by HVI or AHAM to comply with the following requirements: i. The minimum ventilation airflow rate as specified by Section 150.0(o)1G, or alternatively the minimum capture efficiency as specified by Section 150.0(o)1G. ii. The maximum sound rating as specified in Section 150.0(o)1Gvi.
